The Bangor Trail – A Journey Through Mayo's Untamed Wilderness Discover one of Ireland's most remote and rewarding hiking routes on the Bangor Trail, a challenging long-distance walk through the spectacular wilderness of North Mayo. Stretching approximately 39 kilometres between Bangor Erris and Newport, this historic trail takes walkers deep into the Nephin Beg mountain range, where vast blanket bogs, rugged hills and peaceful valleys create an unforgettable outdoor experience. The Bangor Trail offers a rare opportunity to experience the Irish landscape largely untouched by modern development. Following ancient pathways once used by travellers, farmers and livestock drovers, the route passes through areas rich in natural beauty and local history. Remnants of old settlements provide glimpses into the lives of communities that once inhabited this isolated region. As the trail winds through the Wild Nephin National Park landscape, hikers can enjoy sweeping mountain views, open moorland and the remarkable expanse of the Owenduff Bog. The surrounding habitats support a variety of wildlife, including birds of prey, Irish hares and other species adapted to the challenging environment. The journey is as demanding as it is beautiful. Walkers must negotiate uneven tracks, waterlogged ground, exposed sections and occasional stream crossings. Although the route avoids major mountain summits, its considerable distance and isolated location make it a serious undertaking requiring good fitness, preparation and navigation skills.
